Laurel, Mississippi, boasts a story of resilience and reinvention.  Once a thriving logging town, Laurel faced economic hardship when the industry declined in the late 20th century.  By the early 2000s, the downtown area suffered from disrepair, mirroring the struggles of many small towns.

But Laurel refused to give up.  Led by Judy Holifield, a passionate resident and former music teacher in Laurel, a group of committed citizens made up of largely young adults living in the downtown area joined forces with each other.  Partnering with Main Street America, a national organization dedicated to revitalizing historic downtowns, they formed the Laurel Main Street Chapter.  Their mission was to breathe new life into Laurel's heart.

Among those downtown residents were Erin and Ben Napier, stars of the hit HGTV show "Home Town."  The Napiers, alongside their fellow residents, focused on restoring historic homes and revitalizing the downtown area. Their efforts, driven by a love for their community, captured the attention of HGTV, leading to the creation of “Home Town.”

The show's success has transformed Laurel into a tourist destination. Viewers across the country are captivated by Laurel's southern charm, historic architecture, and the heartwarming stories featured on “Home Town.”

Recognizing the importance of sustainability, Laurel has recently implemented a 3% local tax on lodging, including hotels, Airbnb, and Vrbo rentals. This forward-thinking strategy ensures a dedicated fund for future marketing endeavors, ensuring Laurel's continued success after the HGTV series ends.

Today, Laurel boasts a thriving downtown filled with creative community spaces, shops, and restaurants. Laurel's story is an inspiration for any town facing challenges. They've transformed their city into a welcoming and unforgettable destination through community spirit, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to their heritage.
