Found in the rolling hills of Wisconsin's Driftless Area, Mineral Point wasn't always the charming haven it is today.  Once a bustling mining town in the early 1800s, its future seemed uncertain as the mines dried up.  However, the seeds of Mineral Point's remarkable transformation were sown by a deep appreciation for its past.  Forward-thinking residents, as early as the 1920s, embarked on a mission to preserve the town's historic buildings.  These meticulously restored structures from the 1800s, with their unique architectural details, became the foundation for a new identity.  Plus, the town holds the distinction of being the first community in Wisconsin to have the entire town listed on the National Historic Register. 

Mineral Point's leaders didn't just focus on bricks and mortar.  They recognized the town's rich history as a potential treasure trove. The historic Mineral Point Opera House, meticulously restored to its former glory, became a vibrant center for the arts. Events like the Driftless Film Festival further cemented the town's reputation as a cultural destination. In addition, they hold summer concert series called “Jammin' on the Porch” at the historic Orchard Lawn property, as well as other numerous events designed for visitors and residents alike.  They are able to hold these events thanks to their strong Chamber of Commerce and their high level of volunteerism.

Today, Mineral Point stands as a testament to the power of vision and community spirit. What began as an effort to preserve a fading past has blossomed into a thriving tourist destination and sustainable future. Visitors can wander streets steeped in history, enjoy educational experiences at the Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts, and immerse themselves in the charm of a town that has leaned into its rich history, with an eye on the future.
