Aledo, Illinois, is a charming town with a story that resonates with anyone who believes in the power of community. Their journey towards revitalization is a testament to perseverance, collaboration, and a celebration of their unique heritage. Aledo was an early adopter of Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts, a tool for funding development projects. However, as with many towns, revitalization efforts sometimes need to improve. Aledo's story is no different.
In the early 2000s, the idea for a bandshell in beautiful Central Park emerged. This vision, spearheaded by a passionate music instructor, Rusty Ruggles, aimed to create a performance space and foster a sense of social connection within the community. Their dream became a reality – a bandshell and pavilion constructed through grants and TIF funds.
This project sparked a renewed vibrancy in the downtown area. The Aledo Main Street organization was formed to promote the town's charm, attracting visitors and businesses alike. Unfortunately, the economic downturn of 2008 temporarily stalled progress. But even then, the spirit of community persevered, with music in the park continuing to bring people together.
A turning point came in the 2010s when a group of Aledo alumni, the Windborn Group, decided to invest in their hometown. They saw the potential in the neglected downtown buildings and began renovating them into vibrant restaurants, shops, and service businesses.
Aledo's historic significance was further recognized in 2016, when a Historic District was created, including 75 buildings and much of the downtown. It is now listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. This designation, along with local investments in the downtown, breathed new life into the heart of the Aledo.
Today, Aledo offers a delightful blend of history, charm, and community spirit. The restored buildings are a testament to Aledo's heritage, while new businesses add a touch of modern vibrancy. The music in the park continues to be a beloved tradition, reminding everyone of the power of community that fueled Aledo's remarkable transformation.
