Aledo, Illinois, exemplifies the power of community spirit and perseverance in downtown revitalization. Their story starts strong, faces setbacks, and ultimately finds renewed success. Aledo was an early adopter of Tax Increment Financing (T.I.F.) districts, a tool designed to reinvest property tax revenue into a defined area. However, their initial efforts stalled. Yet, the seeds for revitalization were sown with the construction of a bandshell in Central Park. This project, fueled by community collaboration and funded through grants and T.I.F. funds, sparked renewed interest in the downtown area. Organizations like Aledo Main Street emerged, dedicated to marketing the town and its surrounding areas.
The 2008 economic downturn slowed progress, but the spirit of the community persevered. People continued to gather for music in the park, a testament to the town's unwavering spirit. This dedication caught the attention of several local high school graduates who had moved away but remained connected to their hometown. This group formed Windborn Group L.L.C., becoming a key investor in Aledo's revitalization efforts.
A significant turning point came in 2016 when much of Aledo's downtown was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition, coupled with investments from Windborn and others, fueled the renovation of numerous buildings that had fallen into disrepair. A vibrant downtown boasts new restaurants, retail shops, and service businesses today. These thriving establishments generate additional revenue, further propelling Aledo's revitalization. Aledo's journey is a powerful reminder that community spirit, collaboration, and a commitment to history can breathe new life into a downtown area.
