Bellefontaine, Ohio, wasn't always the vibrant town it is today. Just a few years ago, the downtown area was filled with shuttered storefronts, a shadow of its former self. But a remarkable transformation has taken place, thanks to a unique partnership between the city and a development company called Small Nation. After a year-long renovation period, the final touches on Small Nation’s Rainbow Row Bellefontaine project were completed. The five-storefront building was purchased by Small Nation in August of 2021 with emergency and structural repairs completed soon after. Redevelopment began over the summer of 2022 after an initial design period with architecture and construction professionals.

The five-storefront building now houses a vibrant mix of local businesses - from The Craft Emporium, showcasing Ohio beers on tap, to Candy Craze, a have for retro treats.  But Rainbow Row is just the  tip of the iceberg.  With over $30 million invested, 56 buildings have been renovated, and over 60 new businesses have opened their doors. These businesses are not just independent entities – they're designed to complement each other, fostering a sense of community and creating a destination for residents and visitors. The results speak for themselves. Ohio Magazine has recognized Bellefontaine as one of the state's best hometowns, lauded for its impressive revitalization efforts and commitment to history. National recognition has followed, with Bellefontaine being named one of the best small cities in America.

This story proves that revitalizing a downtown area isn't just about attracting businesses – it's about creating a vibrant heart for the community. Bellefontaine's success inspires other small towns, demonstrating the power of collaboration and a well-defined vision.  The advantages of investment in your downtown area are very competitive with traditional economic development practices and support a side of growth that industry simply cannot. When combined as a balanced approach to economic growth, the approach is unstoppable.
