In 2008, Woodbine, Iowa, faced the challenge of a decline in businesses and a growing number of empty storefronts in its historic downtown. But instead of resignation, a remarkable thing happened: a diverse group of community leaders rallied together. From small business owners and educators to farmers and local officials, a collective spirit drove an inspiring comeback.
United by a common goal, this team leveraged historic preservation grants and private investments to inject over $10 million into their downtown. More than 28 buildings received total restorations or exterior facade rehabilitations, and 36 upper-story apartments were created. As a result, property values within the downtown area soared by $2.5 million. Noting the impact, Main Street America and the National Trust designated Woodbine’s downtown as one of their three Great American Main Streets in 2014.
Woodbine's success goes beyond statistics. They've fostered a thriving mix of businesses, while school enrollment is up, new housing is being built, and a new wellness center has opened.
The key to Woodbine's success? Teamwork. As Deb Sprecker, Woodbine Main Street's Executive Director, says, "Community revitalization demands patience, a good plan, and solid teamwork." This dedicated group of residents proves that a small town can achieve remarkable results with collaboration and a shared vision.
