Mattoon, Illinois, boasts a story of resilience and reinvention. Founded in 1855 as a bustling rail hub, Mattoon thrived for decades. However, like many Midwestern towns, it faced challenges due to globalization in farming and manufacturing. Undeterred, Mattoon embarked on a journey of transformation. Focused on improving the quality of life for its residents, the city created “Mattoon in Motion”, a group of dedicated citizens who came together to better their community. Initially working with the Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs (IIRA), they developed a plan with the community participating in the process to ensure their success. Mattoon in Motion has created some unique initiatives, including offering incentives to attract remote workers to relocate to Mattoon. This unique program offers thousands of dollars in incentives for remote workers to relocate to their town. Of course, this is only possible due to the strong fiber infrastructure and internet access that the town has available.
Tourism also plays a vital role in Mattoon's success. Established in 1999, the Tourism and Arts Council organizes a vibrant calendar of events, from weekly festivals to art displays. Strong volunteerism ensures a lively atmosphere throughout the year.
Mattoon capitalizes on its unique heritage by leveraging its partnership with Lender Bagels, one of the largest bagel producers. Their annual Bagel Festival, a five-day extravaganza, draws over 20,000 visitors. Complete with a parade, the crowning of the Bagel Queen, and vibrant displays of music and art, the festival celebrates Mattoon's delicious claim to fame.
Beyond festivals, Mattoon offers further enticements for visitors. Community grants have created charming pocket parks and "third spaces" in the downtown area, providing inviting green spaces for locals and tourists alike. Tournament-quality sports fields further enhance Mattoon's appeal, attracting regional competitions and visitors. Adding a new 66-million-dollar sports complex underscores Mattoon's commitment to becoming a premier sporting destination.
Mattoon's dedication to its future extends to its youth. The "Leaders Innovating for Tomorrow" program empowers high school juniors and seniors with leadership skills, ensuring a bright future for the community. Serving up to 28 high schools across the region, LIFT empowers students to explore new possibilities, take charge of their learning based on their talents and interests, and elevate their future. The staff at LIFT foster a dynamic educational environment built on 21st-century leadership, offering a blend of dual-credit courses, certifications, industry credentials, internships, and hands-on work experiences. Courses include pathways in Childcare, Communications, Culinary Arts & Hospitality, HVAC & Green Energy, Information Technology, Leadership, and Manufacturing.
