As the gateway to western Iowa’s Loess Hills, Woodbine is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike, with scenic trails and historic byways taking center stage.
Woodbine has beautiful natural surroundings to embrace. Willow Lake Recreation Area has six miles of hiking trails to complement its 27-acre fishing lake, swimming beach and campground. Slightly expanding one's radius for outdoor adventure opens 60 miles of hiking trails crisscrossing more than 11,000 acres of forests and rolling hills that define the Loess Hills State Forest. The region's scenic beauty presents the opportunity to introduce outdoor tourists to the equally wonderful amenities within Woodbine itself.
Many come to Woodbine via the Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway and the Western Skies Scenic Byway, two of the oldest and most iconic routes in Iowa that harken back to the days of the classic road trip. The Woodbine Lincoln Highway and Brick Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which, at eleven blocks, is the longest original 1921 stretch of the bricked highway remaining. Folks can stroll along new, exciting shops, restaurants and small businesses as visions of yesteryear dance through their consciousness. Over $10 million was invested in the downtown area, and the progress shows!
Woodbine's story can serve as an inspiration for any small town. Focusing on the unique attributes and paths, whether they be dirt trails or historic pavement, can serve residents and tourists alike.
